Barrie Roberts
(1939-2007) Yesterday, I learned the sad
news that the great Sherlock Holmes pastiche
writer Barrie Roberts passed away. In the world of
crime writing in England, Barrie was known for
writing several mysteries as well as Sherlock
Holmes pastiches. Before his career as a crime
writer, he was also a folk singer and a lawyer. I
think that Barrie was at his best and most
comfortable when he was working at his typewriter.
He published five stories for the Strand, each of
them were a pleasure to edit. It was great
chatting with him over the years, he had a wealth
of info about sports, crime writing, legal
anecdotes, and those wonderful jokes which I'll
never forget. Barrie never made it to the
bestseller lists, but fans of his were almost
fanatical in their devotion to his work and
wouldn't trade a Barrie Roberts novel or short
story for anything. He will be missed. (Andrew
Gulli)
