| Even Sherlock Holmes, well-accustomed to the bizarre, finds the elements of this case unusual. John Douglas lives at Birlstone Manor House, built upon the ruins of a castle surrounded by a moat. Every night he draws up the drawbridge as a precaution against potential villains. Nevertheless, John Douglas is found dead, shot in the face with a very American sawed-off shotgun. Thus Holmes and Dr. Watson are placed into another mystery thick with London fog and the evil of Dr. Moriarty. This is, by the way, one of only four full-length novels in the Sherlock Holmes canon. |
