He published his first book in 1887, entitled A Study in Scarlet. After writing about Holmes for many years, Doyle tried his hand at "serious" novels and other types of writing. None of his later works achieved the fame of Sherlock Holmes. Edward Hardwicke plays Sherlock Holmes' assistant, Dr. Watson, as seen on the popular PBS series Mystery!
