Description
This mysterious tale is the best known and best loved of du Maurier's work. After honeymooning in Italy, the dashing Max de Winter returns to Manderley, his beautiful country estate, with his innocent young bride. But the unsettling presence of Rebecca (the first Mrs. de Winter) still lingers within the mansion's rooms and halls, and most of all in the persistent reminders from the grim housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. The new Mrs. de Winter is nearly driven to despair by Mrs. Danvers' obsessive love of Rebecca, the mysterious and glittering socialite who is thought to have drowned at sea. Anna Massey's haunting performance heightens the suspense and intrigue in this Cover to Cover Unabridged Classic. Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) was born in London and educated at home and in Paris. A prolific writer, she published her first book, The Loving Spirit, in 1931 when she was in her early 20s. She continued to publish 15 successful novels, including Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn. She also wrote two plays, several nonfiction books, and published an autobiography, Myself When Young, in 1977. Anna Massey made her debut at The Cambridge Theater in The Reluctant Debutante. Her stage and screen credits include Rebecca, Hotel du Lac, and Angels and Insects. "Rebecca is a novel of mystery and passion, a dark psychological tale of secrets and betrayal, dead loves and an estate called Manderley that is as much a presence as the humans who inhabit it."-- from a review in 500 Great Books by Women
