Description
Valerie Taylor was last seen two years ago at the age of seventeen. The police investigation turned up nothing and she was presumed dead. But, if Valerie is dead, then who wrote a mysterious letter to her parents saying, "I am alright so don't worry"? And a body has turned up, prompting Inspector Morse to reopen the case. Morse soon finds himself in for the challenge of his career - as each clue always leads back to square one. Colin Dexter was born in Stamford, England and educated at Cambridge University. His career included 13 years of teaching classics to high school age British students. Dexter originally created the character of Inspector Morse while on a rainy Welsh holiday with his wife and daughters. In 1997, the Cartier Diamond Award was presented to Dexter for his life's work Michael Pennington was educated at Cambridge. He appeared at the Royal Court Theatre, London, and several other theaters, where he became a leading Shakespearian actor. Pennington spent several years with the Royal Shakespeare Company and then joined the National Theatre. In 1986 he co-founded and became co-artistic director of the English Shakespeare Company. "Mr. Dexter's books are brilliantly clever concoctions, the prose equivalents of the crosswords his Inspector Morse is hooked on. The author blends elements of the classic puzzle-mystery, the police procedural, and a character saga to create a type of detective novel all his own."-- The Wall Street Journal "Fascinating ... Very satisfying."-- Booksellers "Morse is a thoroughly convincing detective and a very humane one, too."-- The New York Times Book Review
