Description
An Audio Editions Mystery Master Ellery Queen, the gentleman detective, is an intelligent, handsome, and very likeable Harvard grad who works as a private eye alongside his father, Inspector Richard Queen of the New York City police department, solving homicide cases with astute deductive reasoning. The two share an apartment on Manhattan's west side. The Queens star as a formidable team in a series of dozens of mysteries that begin in 1929, when Ellery is a recent college grad, and continue into the 1970s. Inspector Queen, the policeman, gathers the clues, and son Ellery, the intellectual and writer, analyzes them and solves the crime. In The Dragon's Teeth, the case and the client are both eccentric. Multi-millionaire Cadmus Cole asks the Queen detective agency to accept a cool fifteen thousand dollars in retainer but won't tell them what they are to investigate. They will know when the time comes, he assures them. Although baffled, Ellery Queen and his detective partner Beau Rummell agree to take it as the first case of their firm, Ellery Queen, Inc. The next thing they know, Cole has died at sea with no autopsy, the crew has scattered, and Ellery Queen, Inc., is caught up in untangling a baffling case. Two gorgeous young women - one a talented Hollywood actress who attracts handsome men and ugly violence, the other a beautiful sophisticate from the French Riviera - are the heiresses lined up to share in the Cole estate. Deception, murder, the appearance of an imposter Ellery Queen, and a legacy of fifty million bucks - plus a marvelous performance - all combine to provide a fascinating whodunit. Note: the title derives from a Greek myth in which Cadmus sows dragon's teeth, from which sprout misfortune. "Ellery Queen" is actually a team of cousins, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee, the sons of sisters, who wrote using the pseudonym Ellery Queen. Both Dannay and Lee were born in Brooklyn's Brownsville district in 1905. Lee died in 1971 and Dannay in 1982. The team wrote 33 Queen mystery novels and numerous short stories starring Ellery Queen and his father, Inspector Queen. Altogether they penned about 100 books. Dannay is credited with most of the plotting and Lee with the actual writing. The Mystery Writers of America named Ellery Queen Grand
