Shortly after accidentally killing a pedestrian with her car, elderly Althea Boatright dies from a fall in her locked room. After receiving the autopsy report, the chief of police of Ogeechee, Georgia, Henry ("Hen") Huckabee, and his cousin, Officer Trudy Roundtree, decide there is nothing to investigate. Hen's mother (and Trudy's aunt) Lulu and her friends Martha and Ellen disagree. They believe their longtime friend was murdered, and they decide to investigate on their own, much to Hen's exasperation. They begin collecting evidence and gossip and then move on to interviewing suspects, with Trudy along to keep an eye on them. It soon begins to look like the ladies' suspicions are correct, and Trudy joins in the investigation. Matters come to a head in a wacky nighttime stakeout at the scene of the crime. Trudy is upstaged by the ladies, who are a delightfully quirky bunch, in this humorous, small-town, cozy procedural that will appeal to fans of Joan Hess' Maggody series.
